Employer Cuts Overachieving Employee’s Pay in Half When They Switch Them From Flat Rate to Hourly Pay— I Work Fast and Efficient and Can Get Most Jobs Finished in Half to 3/4 of the Allotted Time

My employer just quietly switched from flat rate per job to hourly. My pay was effectively cut in half.

The job I've been working for the past few years works off of a flat rate system. We are given a job and a time frame. The job pays what the time frame for the job is. If we finish faster, we still get the full rate. Any time over is payed hourly, though we aren't allowed to go over unless approved.

Ex. I'm given a job that has a 2 hr time frame. If it takes me the full 2hr or 30min, I get the same pay. This has been great for me because I work fast and efficient and can get most jobs finished in half to 3/4 of the alotted time. Shorter day for the same pay.

Yesterday, I got an email from my manager stating that my hours and my actual time do not match and that moving forward time on job and time claimed need to match. It feels like Im being punished for working effectively. I have to basically cut my productivity down to spent more of my time to get the same base pay.

I know the business charges clients for the full time regardless of time spent of job. Im sure that they are likely looking to pocketing the extra left over from any one not willing to twiddle their thumbs for the full time.

Thaldrath Well tell your boss exactly that. If you're being punished for being efficient, then 2 hours estimated jobs will now take 2 hours to complete, because you didn't sign for a pay cut.

tlof19 sounds like you need to switch from doing multiple jobs a day quickly to doing one job a day slowly.

mattmann72 Its always sad when this happens. You could work slower so that you take the full time, but that can backfire. Your boss or the higher ups could use that as evidence of poor job performance to terminate and replace you. Regardless, this is your sign to start looking for another job.

MyGruffalo Crumble Time to chill and stretch it as long as you can. Make sure you are thorough and everything is done perfectly. Also, check your laws. In my country there's a 3 hour minimum, so an employer can't just call you in for a shift without paying that three hours. With transportation costs, and parking being what they are, it doesn't make sense to screw your employees.
